Paintless or paint? The fingernail test
Look at the dent in a reflection. If the paint is unbroken — no white crack line, no chip — and the metal isn't sharply creased, it's usually a PDR job: a technician works behind the panel with rods and glue tabs and massages the metal back to shape. No filler, no paint, the factory finish stays. If the paint cracked, the metal stretched (it "oil-cans" when you press it) or the dent is on a sharp edge, it's conventional: pull, fill, prime, paint, blend.
Types of dents and how they're usually handled
- Door dings and parking-lot dents — the most common dent job. Usually under an hour with PDR.
- Hail — dozens of small dents across the roof, hood and trunk. Priced per panel; usually a comprehensive claim.
- Creases and body-line dents — harder, still often paintless in experienced hands. Ask the technician how many body-line repairs they do.
- Dents on bumpers — plastic, different method. Bumper repair →
- Dents from a collision — belong on the collision estimate with everything else.
What to ask a dent repair shop
- PDR or conventional — and why? A good tech will explain it with the dent in front of them.
- Is the repair guaranteed? Properly done PDR doesn't come back; get the warranty in writing.
- If paint is needed, will you blend into the next panel? That's how a repaint stays invisible. See paint matching.
Insurance or out of pocket?
Most single dents cost less than a $500 or $1,000 deductible, so most people pay out of pocket and keep the claim off their record. Hail is different — that's a comprehensive claim, doesn't raise rates the way an at-fault claim does, and the deductible is often lower. Ask the shop to estimate both ways. How claims work →

Common questions
How much does it cost to fix a dent in Phoenix?
Typical Phoenix ranges: paintless dent repair runs $75–$175 for a small door ding and $150–$450 for a medium or body-line dent. If the paint is cracked, conventional repair and repaint starts around $350 per panel. Send photos and we'll match you with a shop for a no-cost estimate.
Can every dent be fixed without paint?
No. PDR needs intact paint, access behind the panel, and metal that hasn't stretched. Sharp creases, dents on panel edges and cracked paint need conventional repair.
How long does paintless dent repair take?
A door ding, often about an hour. A panel with several dents or hail, typically same day to two days.
Will the dent come back?
Not if it's done properly. PDR moves the metal back to its original shape; it doesn't "pop" it with suction and hope. Ask the shop for a written guarantee.
Can PDR be done on aluminum?
Yes. Aluminum hoods and truck doors take more time because the metal has less memory, so expect it to cost somewhat more.
